Acrylic paint pouring has become a popular technique, as it is possible for artists of any skill level to create beautiful, unique pieces. The Paint Poured Planets Lesson Plan incorporates acrylic paint and the careful use of gravity to create luminescent planet-like pieces of art.

Paint Poured Planets Art Project

The Paint Poured Planets Lesson Plan uses the acrylic paint pouring technique and adds a science focus by creating the look of swirling gases and the mysterious landscape of a far away planet. The project explores abstract art and the use of non-traditional tools and methods to experiment with color mixing.

Careful preparation of the paint portions and for the pouring method requires the use of math skills and attention to detail. The goal is to create a piece of swirled and blended colors using gravity to spread the paint evenly across the surface.

Tips for Paint Pouring in the Classroom

Paint pouring sounds, and can be pretty messy. Consider doing a little extra prep and following these tips to try and keep things under control.

  • Show students how to carefully measure the amount of paint needed. Too much paint can result in a lot of excess waste and mess.
  • Encourage students not to move the paint around too much after it has run off the edges. The less it’s worked, the more defined the colors will be.
  • Set up a plan for students to take turns washing hands. This will help to keep paint from dripping on the floor while students wait in line to clean up.
  • Have fun! No two paint pour projects are the same, so remind students that every end result is unique and beautiful in its own way.
