Bring your students together to create a complete coloring book of custom mini-mandalas, following the instructions in our Coloring Book of Mini Mandalas lesson plan.

The ‘Mandala’, which means circle in Sanskrit, is a symbol used in some Indian, Hindu, and Buddhist ceremonies. The process by which the ceremonial mandala is created is extremely precise. Interpretations of the mandala vary from the universe to a palace theme to a representation of various Gods, but, no matter the story, the mandala is always read from the outside in.

The mandala has regained popularity in the last several years. Professional artists around the world are creating their own, stunning mandalas, and coloring book printers have seized upon the adult coloring trend to print dozens of different mandala coloring books.

Your students can join the craze, following the Coloring Book of Mini Mandalas lesson plan to create their own mandalas. They’ll begin by using a compass to create a perfect circle, then cutting and “pie-folding” a piece of copy paper to help them mark symmetrical sections on their circles. Then, working from the inside out, they’ll add concentric circles and squares spanning all sections. When the shapes are complete, students will outline their shapes in pen and color each shape using colored pencils. Finally, students will mount their completed mandalas onto a page of a Zig Zag book to form a whole class project.
