From the Guggenheim Museum and the Price Tower in the U.S, and the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo to private residences across America, Frank Lloyd Wright completed more than 500 structures during his prolific, 70-year career as an architect.
Committed to what he called “organic architecture”, Wright’s designs are noted for their harmony with each individual setting. His Fallingwater home in Mill Water, Pennsylvania, for example, incorporates the surrounding waterfalls into the architecture and is actually perched directly above a 30-foot fall.
This lesson blends a study of Wright’s architectural style with an analysis of the use of lights and darks in an architectural setting, teaching students to reverse them using only a few simple materials. By sketching a Frank Lloyd Wright structure and scene, analyzing the colors, highlights, and shadows, and using their knowledge of perspective, students will magically transform a daytime scene to night, or vice versa, with stunning results worthy of Wright himself.
